AREA 16 ARCHIVES

Sober 4 years since Feb 9, 1979, DCM for District 14 at the time of this talk, Sonny is a legend in the Rockmart Area. Sonny gave his life inside and outside AA to service.

Born in Rockmart in 1928, his mother died when he was 21 days old. He went to live with his grandmother. His dad later became an alcoholic. His father told him, "If it wasn't for you I would still have a wife.". Never physically abusive, his father was often verbally abusive. Sonny swore he would never drink.

Now he understands his father. For many years Sonny only worked to earn drinking money.

Sonny went to treatment and AA first in 1966 and later to two meetings.

"But I still did not hear what they said because I wasn't listening and I wasn't seeking...but I went back to church and I was sober for about a year." He started teaching Sunday school. But the compulsion drove him to drink again. He got married.

"In 1978 things got so bad I went to AA. But it was 'Band-Aid' AA."

He finally got sober because he feared being rejected by the adoption agency arranging the child for he and his wife. After the adoption was finalized, he drank again from - August to February.

Then a car accident with his 6 year old son and another boy, opened his eyes. He could not get drunk enough afterwards. Alcohol stopped working.

Sonny died at age 81, November 3, 2010 with friends and members of the community glad he was able to get and stay sober and share his humor and his strength.
