(#1294) Ruth J (Las Vegas, NV)
July 1988 in Atlanta, GA  EVENT: 13th Atlanta Roundup  TYPE: AA, Female, Story

Sober 18 years since 6/26/1970 , Ruth lived in Albany, GA for a couple years.

She has a long, hard to pronounce last name.

"I had trouble with poles - I ran into them and married them."

Born and raised in New York City from a 100% alcoholic family, her mother, a nurse, died in 1968 from the disease. Her father, a lawyer, had always been an alcoholic. She could not bring friends home. Her sister is also an alcoholic.

Ruth is a nurse. That was a correct decision early on.

Her drinking did not get out of control until after her mother died.

She got pregnant and married in that order to an alcoholic. That lasted 10 months. Her nursing profession was going well. She moved to Grand Forks, ND.

She met her next ex-husband there. He was in the military. They were stationed in Germany, Albany, GA and Little Rock, AR before he went to Vietnam.

She got bit by a brown recluse spider and started drinking as an excuse but it got out of control. She sent a neighbor to AA a year before she went.

Her husband, a non-alcoholic, came back from Vietnam and they were transferred to Las Vegas, NV. The bottle hiding began. He has gone on to other places but Ruth has stayed.

The love from her daughter and the heat from her husband and work came to a head in June 1970.
