(#4691) Rod C (Tyler, TX)
10/28/1991 in Peoria, IL  EVENT: Illinois Fall Conference of Young People in AA  TYPE: AA, Male, Story

Sober 24 years since 3/7/1980, after some 8 years sober in AA, having relapsed on percosets and then alcohol, Rod finally got it.

Airline pilot by profession, Rod grew up in a small Arkansas town.

He does not hold back on his opinions about AA.

He believes that calling himself "an alcoholic and a ... [whatever]" is just another attempt to make himself special.

IT did not get better when he stopped drinking, IT stayed the same, HE got better when he worked the 12 steps of AA.

Complacency is the greatest enemy of alcoholics.

In 1977 his wife was murdered in his home while he was out of town.

AA showed up for him even after he was falsely charged with the murder.
