Grew up Irish Catholic in Chicago. His police officer father died suddenly and it destroyed the family. His mother got it 50% right because his sister is a gem.

He thought a great deal about suicide in the final days of drinking until a co-worker asked him if he was OK and Michael admitted the truth. Brian was a member of AA in Chicago took him to his first meeting and bought him his first Big Book.
He was transferred to South Dakota early in sobriety and got a sponsor named Joe Friday.
He shares how a close friend in AA shared:
"The difference between a spiritual awakening and a spiritual experience is that when we have a spiritual awakening, we awaken to the fact that we have had spiritual experiences our whole life."
Michael adds:
"My job is to stop running and let the Hounds of Heaven catch me."
