(#1186) Kate M (Santa Fe, NM)
3/19/2011 in Marietta, GA  EVENT: 21st Marietta Roundup  TYPE: Al-Anon, Female, Story

Kate came into Al-Anon at age 17 because her brother attempted suicide.

The event also forced her mother into sobriety (now 18 years).

He has had periods of sobriety but she believes he has started drinking again.

Kate shares, with depth, what it was like to grow up in an alcoholic home and how the manifestations can still affect her.

From a recent relationship she realized she has not placed a high enough value on her own safety.

She was putting her need for a relationship above her need for safety and her duty to provide a safe environment for fellow family members and friends.

She also discovered her own rage and anger she could not see.

Another brother died three years ago, what Kate considers, an alcoholic death.

She shares her experience and how Al-Anon helped her make it through.

She is an attorney by trade. She believes this would not have been possible without the Program.
