Sober 35 years since 3/7/1989, John was raised by hard working, very well-off parents.
He was smart, and learned easily, but alcoholism drove him to the point where he was living in filth, using a hose to steal water from the neighbors so he could flush the toilet in the evenings.
Recovery removed the barriers that allowed him to go from GED to PHD.
