(#1214) Herb W (Midland, TX)
8/19-21/2005 in Cartersville, GA  EVENT: 28th Allatoona Roundup  TYPE: AA, Male, Story

Sober 29 years since September 1975 in Dallas, TX at 45 years old, Herb was born in Texas, his dad in the wildcat oil business. Herb played football in high school and college with a Heisman Trophy winner at SMU where they won two championships.

He became a lawyer, working for an oil company. Unmarried, he quit his job and worked his way around the world.

He had to work at being an alcoholic but it finally bit him. Sports probably kept him from being an alcoholic sooner.

He came back to the USA and back to Midland, TX and the oil company. He was married for 12 years, the more he drank the worse the marriage got. Though an unhappy marriage, he was angered to be served divorce paper.

For several years he worked for Merrill Lynch drinking wine on the way to work and in the restroom. He was fired and lived from hand to mouth sometimes in court with some of his lawyer friends. He was 17 times in jail in two years.

With no place left to go he called a man he knew in AA. He took Herb back to mama. She took him back with several rules.

He got sober with David A, a great leader in AA at the state and national level.
