George is sober since 1974. He ran a park in the swamps of south Georgia as a practicing alcoholic. There are stories ofalligators, insane shootouts, repeated trips to asylums and institutions and the felling of hopelessness and despair so common to the alcoholic as he reaches bottom. George later went on to found a kind of boot camp for alcoholics that is still operating in 2012 down near his beloved swamps.
