(#1416) Ernie G (Ohio (later Adrian, MI))
1958 in Fort Wayne, IN  EVENT: Unknown  TYPE: AA, Male, Story, Historical

One of the first 100 members of AA, , Ernie apparently got sober under the care of Dr Bob in Akron who told him:

1) he needed to find a Power Greater than himself

2) he needed to ask that Power to help keep him sober

3) he needed to start giving and he would start receiving

Ernie drank for 12 years and checked himself into the hospital in Akron sober but knowing he could not quit for long on his own.

He does not know what people mean when they say they cannot get the spiritual part of the Program.

"Every day is a new day, a new spiritual experience in accordance to the way we live it and we are not going to get anything unless we give away what we already know or what we already have - not for any bouquets but for the joy of serving."

This may be Ernie G the second mentioned in Dr. Bob and the Good Old Timers on page 175:

An article appeared in Liberty Magazine that fall. Ernie G. the second remembered being with Doc when it came out. "Doc said, 'Let's go down to the drugstore and get the Liberty.' We drove down and came home and read it. You never saw such an elated person in your life."

"We all were," said Ernie's wife, Ruth. "Anne especially. She said, 'You know, it looks like we might be getting a little bit respectable.' There was an aura that afternoon, a feeling of complete oneness that this great thing had come into the world ."
