(#1202) Ed A (Albany, GA)
8/18/1991 in Cartersville, GA  EVENT: 14th Allatoona Roundup  TYPE: AA, Male, Story

Ed is sharing Sunday morning in his first Roundup talk. He is a Baptist preacher and alcoholic who used to send people to AA.

He grew up in Macon, GA in a loving, very strict, religious but not very spiritual home. There was no alcohol. This did not make him an alcoholic. He loved the effect and drank too much too often.

He decided early on that whatever his mother was against must be fun. He first drank in 7th or 8th grade and did it for effect that first time. He decided never to experiment with alcohol and followed his calling to the ministry. He was able to do that fairly well until he met his wife. Then he quit that but did drink cough syrup more than was prescribed.

With four children he got fired from a church and started drinking after eight years without a drink.

He started drinking after dark in secret at 27 years old. He quit again.

He got a new church. The chair of the deacons was an AA member. When Ed started dringing again, this man new something was up . Ed told him a doctor got him addicted to cough medicine. The man took him to an AA meeting in another toen.

Ed insisted introducing himself as a drug addict at a clised meeting of AA even though he had a bottle of liquor under the seat of his car in the parking lot. He was asked not to come back. Now with a resentment to AA, he swore never to go back. He continued to drink.

He finally got sober when his family decided to intervene.
