Sober 9 years since 1955, Al drank for 35 years, 30 years as a practicing Doctor of Medicine specializing in psychiatry and was 57 years old at the time of this talk.
He was the director of a mental hospital for 20 years where over 9,000 alcoholics came through.
"I saw firsthand what this disease does to the body of the alcoholic."
...but he could not see it in himself.
One time he came to on his own psychiatrist's couch dressed in a clown costume with full makeup.
Very funny and easy to understand given the age of the recording.
