(#2709) Doris K (Marietta, GA)
3/7/2020 in Woodstock, GA  EVENT: Breakfast Club Monthly Speaker  TYPE: AA, Female, Story

Sober 34 years since 7/23/1985, she grew up in the Boston area.

Her father was an alcoholic with no legs - he did a lot of falling-down when he drank.

The youngest child, and the only one still alive, she was often told just to go to her room and from that started the feeling of not fitting in.

She became an RN and then a supervisor and, in some sense, a functioning alcoholic.

Then in the wee hours of one morning, she called her niece who was in AA and asked for help.

Her niece helped her get to her first meeting, but soon told Doris she was on her own after that.

One old-timer would ask her, "And what are you angry about today?", and she would tell him.

She recently moved to Georgia to be with her daughter who was newly sober.

They frequently go to meetings together. I feel a brightening when they come into the room.

Pretty neat deal from one who was once, constantly angry in early recovery,
