In Al-Anon since age 23, Aaron grew up in a loving family with no alcoholism except his mother's mother, but she was the person he enjoyed the most as a young child.
Self-righteous indignation became the normal pattern in his relationships.
"But I stayed for the same reason I did in other relationships, jobs and friendships. First...I felt I was needed...that she could absolutely not survive without me to stay and take care of her. I also felt, this is as good as it gets - I don't deserve any better than this. And the strongest reason - the absolute insanity of this relationship is better than the abject terror of being alone."
Then he met a woman in AA that was unlike any relationship before - but she was more dry than sober at the time.
This finally brought him into Al-Anon.
There he foulnd that he wsa powerless but not helpless.
