Sober 54 years since 2/2/1957 when he was 24 years old, Tom went from inmate to warden in sobriety spending over 35 years employed by the North Carolina Department of Corrections. Astonishing.
He starts out going over the first five steps and his own history. When he came in he did not believe he was alcoholic but he did hear speakers say, "When I drank I got in trouble." That he could identified with.
His earliest exposure to God left a bad taste in his mouth. He did not go back into church until he was eleven years sober.
He had to start a slow climb to realizing the nature of his legacy of bad behavior - to be restored to sanity. It started with adopting God as we understand him that he first felt in an AA meeting in a maximum security penitentiary.
